Essential system software

The following packages we deem quite essential for any Debian (home) server:

Big Bag'o'utilities (not "a" package, but a collection of essential tools like less and sudo)
OpenSSH server
vim which stands for VI iMproved
Rootkithunter
Crontab
iproute2
Compilation software
IPtables and firewall
IPsec software

kerneloops
